Venue: Catoctin Wildlife Preserve and Zoo, Thurmont MD

Services: Design and installation of looping atmosphere audio systems

Atmospheric audio enhances the guest experience at the zoo, adding music and sound effects to reinforce the theme of the area, as well as attract new guests to an area.

Peter Wood Productions was contracted to provide a turn-key system: script writing, voice-over recording, audio production, unit assembly and on-site installation.

Multiple systems are installed throughout the park, and they either operate off a timer, or are powered up and down daily by zoo staff. Some systems are disc-based, using a simple DVD player and looping DVD that can be changed with the season. Other systems are flash-memory driven (see photo below), which increases their longevity due to the lack of moving parts.

Several systems include pushbutton terminals which play one of two "did you know" facts for zoo-goers. Once the announcement has finished, the looping background music resumes.

All outdoor systems terminate in waterproof outdoor speakers, positioned for optimum guest enjoyment, but at minimum aesthetic intrusion.
